New York City (NYC) is the most visited city in America for good reason. In one week visitors can see must see sites, like the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Metropolitan Museum of Art, etc. However, there is much more to see. NYC is full of unique neighborhoods that have their own attractions, like Chelsea.
Chelsea is the location for multiple art galleries, the historic district preserved with an abundance of historical style, and home to some of the newest and most popular attractions within NYC. This Manhattan gem is a diverse scene and full of nightlife; with many attractions for all interests, Chelsea is inclusive to everyone and is bound to be a fun destination. We spent three days in Chelsea, NYC and highlight its jewels.
Where is Chelsea, NYC Located?
Located in the neighborhood of west Manhattan in New York City, the boundaries of Chelsea extended from the southernmost part of 14th Street, west to the Hudson River 6th Avenue to the east, and north around 34thStreet. Additionally, Chelsea is patrolled by the 10th Precinct of the New York City Police Department. The neighborhood borders Midtown Manhattan to the north, Koreatown, Nomad, and the Flatiron District to the east, and Greenwich Village to the South.

Chelsea Historic District
The Chelsea Historic District, commissioned for preservation in 1970 and extended in 1981 by the Landmarks Preservation Commission contains significant examples of the 70s and 80s architectural style.
Chelsea Market
Located in the heart of the NYC Meatpacking District, the market contains collections of distinct and diverse goods. Merchants fill the marketplace selling some of the finest fish, prime meats from the areas’ best butchers and fishmongers, unique imported dry goods, fresh produce, and artisanal cheeses and bread.
Along with the vast grocery selection, Chelsea Market is well known for being a culinary destination with some of the best indoor food with places such as Cull & Pistol, Miznon, Mok Bar, and Takumi Tacos, some of the most well-recognized selections of varying cuisines in NYC.
An annual attraction destination of more than 6 million visitors, it is one of the densest and written-about locations in NYC. For both local and international foodies, it is impossible to enter Chelsea Market and not find a good meal for you.
ARTECHOUSE NYC
In need of a family fun interactive activity, head over to ARTEHOUSE NYC to see some of the emerging artists’ innovative art pieces. The nation’s first original art spot focused on the intersection of art, technology, and science. Using megapixel count projections of any art-based resolution and Hyperreal Sound Technology visitors can experience the most techy-advanced art platform in the entire world right in the heart of Chelsea.
This iconic art wonder takes over 100-year-old boiler room space underneath the popular Chelsea Market. ARTECHOUSE NYC is one of the most unique arts and virtual reality (VR) experiences. For instance, its most recent production was a collaboration with the Society of Neuroscience known as the Life of a Neuron which goes through the story of life at a cellular level using 3D models for an up-close immersive and interactive art phenomenon.
Edge NYC
The Edge is the highest-viewing sky deck in the entirety of the Western Hemisphere. Located in 30 Hudson Yards at the 4th level, it is a unique design suspended 1,100 feet in the air with an outdoor sky deck with 360-degree panoramic views. The panoramic view allows one to see the entire New York skyline, including the Statue of Liberty.
Also, the building is structured with a deck that includes angled glass walls and a glass floor providing a gorgeous view of the outdoor sky deck whilst looking 100 straight stories right below your feet.
One unique experience within the Edge is the Eastern Point. Here, there is a space for one individual to stand alone surrounded by glass, air, and the sky to experience a sensation never before. For views, nowhere else, some family fun, and great pictures, the Edge observation deck is a thrilling one that you cannot miss.
Vessel
An extravagant crown of the Hudson Yards is its spiraling figure-8-like staircase sitting within the heart of Chelsea along the Hudson River, the Vessel. This interactive piece of artwork designed by the Heatherwick Studio allows visitors to enjoy the views of NYC from different perspectives with its varying angles, heights, dimensions, and vantage points.
Made up of 154 interconnected flights of stairs, it forms an ocular structure with 80 landings, each offering a new exceptional sight of the city and river. The Vessel is a unique destination for family, friends, or just a visit alone to experience great views, but also to understand the art of one focal point containing multiple aspects and viewpoints.
High Line Park
In need of a nice scenic stroll, maybe you’re a history junkie, or just curious to explore more of NYC? Head on over to the High Line Park located on the Manhattan West Side (aka Chelsea). An elevated railway transformed into a public park in Hudson Yards, provides unique views of the Hudson River, New Jersey, Hudson Yards, the NYC skyline, and tons of historical finds from the panels of information along the walkway. Furthermore, the park features some interesting artworks, horticulture, food vendors, community gardening, and multiple access points found on the website to further make your travels and enjoyment more pleasurable.
James A. Farley Post Office
If you’re looking for something to do in Chelsea, look to the largest grandeur within it, the James A. Farley Post Office, a popular attraction located across from Madison Square Garden (MSG) and Penn Station. An architectural phenomenon of its era, the NYC post office is a testament to the operation of the US once conducted. The main post office in NYC also represents the unique postal code of 10001.
Originally built in 1912 later to be expanded in size massively by Postmaster James A. Farley, covering eight acres, with bravado over the largest Corinthian Colonnade in the world. Here, visitors will find the inscription so often and erroneously cited as the official credo of the USPS:
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.
Now, no longer a 24/7 operational office for postal service, yet people are still able to buy stamps, have packages weighed, and send mail, the James A. Farley Post Office houses an Amtrak station, a food hall, and tons of history for everyone to learn.
A Few Places to Eat in Chelsea
NYC is ideal for foodies. No place else in America can one try almost any kind of food at all price ranges. There are 482 Michelin starred restaurants but there are cheap eats too. However, Chelsea Market has some of the lowest cost places to eat in NYC.
The area hosts several colleges including the Fashion Institute of Technology, the City College of New York, Baruch College. Consequently, there are inexpensive food choices even outside of Chelsea Market.
Additionally, there are more expensive restaurants in Chelsea, NYC like Old Homestead Steakhouse, Okuda, Del Posto, Ushiwakamaru, etc, but we focus on ones where you can eat quickly at reasonable cost.
Ichiran
First try the tonkotsu ramen. One popular choice, we loved was Ichiran on 31st Street. There are only three stores of this Japanese franchise in the US, and all three are in NYC. The unique dining experience involves booths for solo dining and focusing on enjoyment of the ramen.
Miznon
Miznon is many lists of top places to eat in Chelsea, NYC. The restaurant chain started in Tel Aviv, and one opened in Chelsea Market. It focuses on Israeli pitas or sandwiches. Try their famous roasted cauliflower head.
Cull & Pistol
Cull & Pistol is a seafood restaurant and oyster bar in Chelsea Market. Cull is a lobster that has lost one if its claws, while Pistol is a lobster that has lost both its claws. Like Miznon, it makes many lists of top places to eat in Chelsea, NYC. The restaurant is owned by the same family who owns Lobster Place.
Los Tacos
Los Tacos is another restaurant in Chelsea Market. The restaurant was started by three friends from Southern California and Mexico who wanted street tacos in NYC. The place is popular, and the lines are long because the food is good, and the prices are cheap.
Grainne Café
On the west side of Chelsea is Grainne Café. Grainne is the daughter of King Cormac mac Airt in Irish mythology. However, don’t let the Irish name fool you, the restaurant serves French bistro food, and the crepes are solid. If the weather is nice, sit outside and people watch while you eat.
B Café
Tired of Chelsea. Try eating at B Café East for the mussels and Belgian beer. It’s on the Upper Eastside, so, you need to take the subway, Lyft, Uber, or taxi there from Chelsea. The covered patio is a nice place to sit and enjoy your meal.
Afterwards walk over to Chip City and try the cookies for dessert.
Final Thoughts on The Jewels of Chelsea, NYC
Chelsea, NYC is an interesting neighborhood to spend a long weekend. The neighborhood is ideal for newlyweds desiring a short trip, seniors on a budget, and families on a Summer long weekend trip. There is much to see and do. Besides visiting the jewels of Chelsea, NYC, you can take in a game at MSG, both the New York Knicks and New York Rangers play there. If you are in Chelsea, NYC longer, take in a Broadway musical or the ballet at the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) followed by dinner nearby.
